# Projects

A project collects files on a topic. You can select it as a knowledge source in several chats without uploading the documents again each time.

In the new interface, projects are located in **Chat history**. The former Arcana knowledge packages are now presented as projects. **Arcana** remains the name of the underlying knowledge management system and its administration area.

```{include} ../_includes/ui-sidebar.md
```

## Create your own project

1. Open **Chat history**.
2. Select **New project** in the **Projects** section.
3. Enter a name and, optionally, a description.
4. Save the project and [upload files](../using-chatbht/upload-documents.md).

```{include} ../_includes/ui-project-edit.md
```

A name such as “Seminar materials” or “Dissertation – literature” makes the contents easy to identify. The description helps explain the project; the actual knowledge comes from its processed files.

## Your own and assigned projects

| Project | What you can do |
| --- | --- |
| **Your own project** | Create it, upload files, edit and delete it, and use it in chats. |
| **Assigned project** | Use shared contents in chats and view available files. Management actions appear only with the necessary permissions. |

A project organises files, not conversations. Several chats can use the same knowledge source while keeping separate histories. Project selection applies to the currently open chat.
