# Memories

Memories are short pieces of background information you save yourself. chatBHT can consider them in future requests without you having to repeat them each time.

```{include} ../_includes/ui-memories.md
```

## Create a memory

1. Open **Memories** using the brain icon in the sidebar.
2. Click the **plus**.
3. Write the background information and save it.
4. Leave **Use memories** switched on if you want active entries to be considered.

```{include} ../_includes/ui-memory-edit.md
```

For example:

> I am in my first semester and am not yet familiar with the basics of statistics.

The interface manages explicitly saved entries. It does not display a life history automatically assembled from all your conversations.

## Individual entries and the main switch

| Control | Effect |
| --- | --- |
| **Search** | Finds memories by their contents. |
| **Activate / Deactivate** on an entry | Switches an individual memory on or off. |
| **Use memories** | Switches the use of all memories on or off. |
| **Edit** | Changes the contents and creates a new version. |
| **Delete** | Removes the entry for future requests. |

A memory is considered only when both its own status and the main switch are active. Changes affect future requests and do not remove text from existing responses.

## Limits

Memories provide background; they are not system instructions. Use [Prompts](prompts.md) for fixed instructions and [Projects](../arcana/what-is-arcana.md) for larger collections of documents.

The context available for memories is limited. With many or long entries, only some parts may be included. Keep entries short and relevant. Personal memories are not included in temporary chats or public guest requests.
