# Prompts

Under **Prompts**, save reusable **system instructions**. For example, they define how chatBHT should explain, structure or phrase its answers. Continue to enter the specific task in the message field.

```{include} ../_includes/ui-prompts.md
```

## Create and activate a prompt

1. Open **Prompts** using the notebook icon in the sidebar.
2. Click the **plus** next to the heading.
3. Enter a name and the **System Prompt**.
4. Save the entry.
5. Click its name or **Activate** to use it as your personal system instruction.

```{include} ../_includes/ui-prompt-edit.md
```

For example:

> Explain terms for first-year students. Start with a short definition, give an example and finish with a comprehension question.

Search checks both prompt names and contents. **Active system prompt** shows the text copy currently in use. One system instruction is active at a time; library entries are not combined automatically.

## Edit, version and deactivate

Use the **pen** icon to edit an entry. Changes create a new version. An already activated text copy does not update automatically: activate the edited prompt again to use its new version.

Deleting a library entry also does not automatically remove a previously activated text copy. To stop using it, select **Deactivate system prompt** in the top section.

The active system instruction is a personal preference and can affect other chats you own. Check it when starting a topic that calls for different responses. You can also edit the System Prompt directly under [Settings → Chat settings](settings.md#chat-settings).
