# Speech translation

With **Translate** in the recording dialog, your speech is output as text in a chosen target language.

## Record a translation

1. Open the **microphone** in the message field.
2. Stay on the **Record** tab and enable **Translate**.
3. Open the **Target language** menu that appears beside it and choose a language. English is preselected.
4. Start recording, speak and then stop the recording.
5. Check the translated result. Use **Insert into prompt** to move it into the chat.

```{include} ../_includes/ui-translation.md
```

The language selector is part of the dialog. The list in your app is authoritative; it includes German, English, French, Spanish and other languages.

## What is translated?

With **Translate** off, you get a transcript in the detected original language. With translation enabled, you get text in the selected target language. This changes neither the interface language nor all subsequent chat responses automatically.

English translation uses the corresponding speech service. For other target languages, the recording is first transcribed and the text is then translated. Check names, technical terms and numbers before reusing the result.

The same recording limits and features apply as for [speech input](voice-input.md). This function produces text; it does not generate spoken translation.
